When to fish
Anaa Atoll.
Start with the season. Then consider the moon, the water and the kind of week you want. Use this guide to plan a May–October fishing trip to Anaa.

We recommend May through October for sight fishing on Anaa. This generally drier season offers a greater chance of good weather for spotting fish than the warmer, wetter November–April cyclone season. Our hosted Anaa departures are scheduled for August.
Start with this window, then let us help you choose your week and coordinate the guides, island stay and travel arrangements. Our hosted trips bring those details together so you can focus on the fishing.

Moon phases for your Anaa trip.
Use the new- and full-moon dates below to compare possible weeks. We favor a morning rising tide for incoming bonefish, followed by afternoon high water for pursuing GTs on the reef edges. The moon phase times are specific astronomical events. The high- and low-tide columns provide an indicative regional reference. All times are shown in Anaa local time (UTC−10).
Morning-tide week highlights Thursday–Tuesday fishing weeks with a useful morning rise and an afternoon high on most of the six fishing days. The dates of each highlighted week appear in its moon-phase row.
About the tide times.
Tide times are indicative, based on the limited available data from nearby Makemo. Timing on Anaa may differ; confirm local conditions with your guides. These times are for trip planning, not navigation.
A week around the full moon.
The full moon falls on August 16 at 9:29 pm, during this departure.
A week after the new moon.
The new moon falls on August 20 at 12:44 am, two days before this departure begins.

Moon calculations: US Naval Observatory, 2027 and 2028, converted from Universal Time to UTC−10. Tide reference: TICON-4/GESLA-4 (Hart-Davis, Dettmering and Seitz, 2025; CC BY 4.0), using Makemo observations supplied by the University of Hawaiʻi Sea Level Center. Harmonic predictions calculated with UTide; no Anaa timing adjustment applied. Calendar checked October 29, 2026. November–April is outside the planning window shown here.
What makes a good fishing week?
Season and moon phase help frame a trip. The daily plan still needs local knowledge of the water, the weather and access to the flats.
How much should I rely on the moon?
Use it to understand where your week falls in the lunar cycle, rather than as a ranking of good and bad dates. Tell us what you want to fish for and which dates you can travel; we will discuss the options alongside the local guiding arrangements.
How do tides affect the lagoon and GT fishing?
The change in tidal height inside Anaa’s enclosed lagoon can be small, and swell and wind also influence water levels. That does not make the tide unimportant outside the lagoon.
On the ocean-facing reef edges and passages where we fish for giant trevally, the tide and moving water are important parts of the day’s plan. Your guides read the stage of the tide alongside swell, wind and safe access. A predicted high or low water time is not the same as a forecast of slack water or peak current.
How should I use the indicative tide times?
The table uses published Makemo tidal constants as a regional planning reference, without a locally measured timing correction for Anaa. It helps frame possible fishing weeks rather than set a precise daily schedule. Actual high and low water, and flow through each reef opening, will vary.
Times are shown to the minute and are for trip planning, not navigation. Confirm fishing and boating decisions with your local guides.
What do the highlighted fishing weeks mean?
We look for at least two hours of rising water between 8 am and noon, plus a high tide between noon and 6 pm, on at least four of the six Thursday–Tuesday fishing days. Each highlighted row names that fishing week; the tide times in the row still refer only to its new- or full-moon date.
The highlights use the same indicative Makemo reference. They help shortlist dates; local water movement, wind and swell still guide the fishing plan.
What else should I consider before choosing dates?
Ask about guide availability, the length of your stay, island flights and accommodation before committing to international travel. On the water, wind, cloud and swell can change the practical fishing options, so leave room for your guides to adapt the plan.
